Easy Sun Safety Tips That Can Help Prevent Skin Cancer

Posted on 02 May 2022

As the weather warms up, people tend to spend more time outdoors. Thus, making sun protection an important part of a daily routine. Whether you're taking the kids on a bike ride, working in the garden, or just driving to work, protecting your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays is a must. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and prevention is key. Here are a few sun safety tips to help prevent skin cancer.

Protective Clothing

One of the easiest sun safety tips to protect yourself is to wear protective clothing when you will be spending time outdoors. Wear a lightweight long-sleeved shirt, and pants, and throw on a wide-brimmed hat before you head outside.  Dress your kids in sun-protective clothing if possible, as this will greatly reduce their exposure to the sun. Look for clothing with labels indicating the ultraviolet protection factor. This will indicate what fraction of the sun's UV radiation will be absorbed by the fabric.

For great options for the entire family, contact us! If you don't see a UPF label, choose fabrics like cotton that are tightly woven. They offer the best protection. Don't forget to protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses! Look for a label that says "100% UV protection". Then, choose a style that covers a good portion of the eye area.

Sunscreen Is as Part of Any Sun Safety Tips

It might seem obvious, but slather on the sunscreen! Put sunscreen on 15-30 minutes before you head outside, and then reapply at least every 2 hours, or sooner if you have been swimming or sweating. For children, choose a sunscreen that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide because it is less irritating and doesn't get absorbed into the skin. Choose a sunscreen labeled "broad spectrum", and is at least SPF 30, which blocks 97% of the sun's UVB rays.

UV light is strongest during the mid-day hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. So, avoid being in direct sunlight during those hours if possible. Seek shade, and be aware that some UV light can pass through windows. The shade will not protect you completely since UV rays can bounce off of reflective surfaces, so always use other forms of protection like sunscreen and protective clothing as well.

It's important to care for your skin and be sure to check regularly for suspicious skin lesions.
