Five Sun Protection Tips for Kids With Sensory Disorders

Posted on 27 November 2022

Parents are largely aware of the need to protect their children's delicate skin from potentially harmful UV rays. So, when the sun is up, they stock on UV rays, shop for long-sleeved clothing, and teach their children ways to avoid sunburns. Sun protection is not quite easy for parents whose kids suffer from sensory disorders. These kids tend to be hypersensitive to the touch, making it hard to apply sunscreen on them. The feel of the fabrics that are meant to offer them sun protection might elicit unpleasant reactions. Ideally, it takes time for a parent to master their kid's preferences.

In the meantime, here are five easy sun protection tips for kids with sensory disorders.

Tip #1: Lean Towards Natural Materials for Kids With Sensory Disorders

A reliable sun protection strategy for kids with sensory disorders involves choosing the right clothes. Clothes made from synthetic materials tend to be less comfortable for these kids. Choosing the more natural fabrics for a child with sensory disorders is advisable.

These types of clothes tend to be more breathable, soft, lightweight, and hypoallergenic. Softness is a key element of sun-protective clothes for kids with sensory issues. At Little Leaves, we use a bamboo blend to achieve super softness on our clothing items.

Tip #2: Opt for Clothes Without Tricky Fasteners

Sensory issues might prompt a child to be disturbed by clothes with tricky fasteners such as zips and buttons. Viable alternatives to tricky fasteners in sun-protective clothing include Velcro fasteners and drawstrings.

Tip #3: Choose Sensory-Friendly Clothes Without Tags and Seams

When choosing sun protection clothing for kids with sensory disorders, be mindful of tags and misaligned seams. Some parents might decide to buy clothes with tags and then remove them. This solution is unreliable because removing tags might only add roughness in some cases. A better solution is to buy specially made sun-protection clothing with no tags or rough seams.

Tip #4: Take a Different Approach to Sunscreen Application

Sunscreen is still the first line of defense when offering kids with sensory disorders the right protection. It is not tenable to just apply sunscreen to a child with tactile sensory disorder. You will need to turn the sunscreen application into a game, add more fun to the exercise, use roll-on varieties, try to distract the child, or use a spray-based sunscreen.

Tip #5: Consider Clothes With UPF

For kids who cannot tolerate sunscreen application, UPF clothing provides a viable alternative. Lightweight long-sleeve clothing with UPF, wide hats, and rash guards can solve the problem of kids who cannot tolerate sunscreen due to their sensory issues.
