5 Tips for Protecting Your Child From the Sun While Playing Sports

As the leaves start to change color and the weather cools down, it signals the start of fall sports season! For parents of kids who play sports, this time of year can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Exciting because your child gets to compete and play the sport they love, but nerve-wracking because of the potential risks that come with playing sports outdoors, like heat stroke and dehydration. 

One of the biggest risks associated with playing sports outdoors is sun exposure. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, over one million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States, and athletes are especially susceptible because of the amount of time they spend in the sun. 

So how can you make sure your child is protected from the sun while they're out on the field? Read on for our top tips!

1. Choose the Right Sunscreen When Your Child Is Playing Sports

When it comes to sunscreen, make sure to choose a water-resistant product that is SPF 30 or higher. Apply the sunscreen about 30 minutes before your child heads outside, and make sure to reapply it every two hours, or more often if they're sweating or swimming. 

2. Dress Them in Sun-Protective Clothing

In addition to sunscreen, dressing your child in sun-protective clothing keeps them safe from the sun when playing sports. Look for clothing that is made from tightly woven fabrics, and avoid anything that is see-through or has holes in it. If you're unsure about a fabric, hold it up to the light – if you can see through it, the sun's rays will be able to get through as well. 

3. Have Them Wear a Hat

A hat is a great way to protect your child's face, ears, and neck from the sun. Look for a hat that has a wide brim all the way around, and make sure it fits snugly so it doesn't blow off in the wind. 

4. Make Sure They’re Staying Hydrated

It's important for all athletes to stay hydrated when playing sports, but it's especially important in the hot sun. Make sure your child drinks plenty of water throughout the day. Also, pack extra water and sports drinks for them to take to practice and games. 

5. Check the UV Index

The UV index is a measure of the amount of ultraviolet radiation that is present in the environment. The higher the UV index, the greater the risk of sunburn. You can check the UV index for your area on the EPA's website. 

If the UV index is high, take extra precautions to protect your child from the sun, such as having them wear long sleeves and pants, and staying in the shade as much as possible.
